Solutions for When Your Home Won't Cool Down

Is Your Home Too Hot to Handle?

Sometimes the sun shines so brightly on the Sunshine State that it gets uncomfortable even inside an air-conditioned home. But it shouldn’t! A good AC should still be able to keep up with the heat on the hottest days.

If your home feels warm when your AC is running or the temperature doesn’t match what is on your thermostat, try some of these troubleshooting tips to get back your home comfort.

Your AC May Be Too Small

The size of your AC has a big impact on whether or not it cools your home efficiently. If it’s too big, it will be wasting energy by constantly turning on and off. If it’s too small, it will be constantly running but never able to adequately cool your home. So you’ll be paying a lot of money in energy without reaping the benefits.

If you’ve had problems with your AC not being up to the task of cooling your home, consult with your local HVAC technician to make sure it’s the right size.

Change Your Filter

You’ll be surprised how changing the filter can improve your AC’s performance. A dirty filter hinders airflow, which in turn reduces the cool air circulating around your home. Again, this means you’re paying for your AC to run without getting the cool air you deserve.

Clean or change your filter once it fills up with dust and other debris. If you aren’t sure if it’s full, it’s always better to air on the cautious side and change it anyway.

Reduce Sources of Heat

The habits you perform (or don’t perform) every day could be making it harder for your AC to cool your home. It’s tough for an air conditioner to use cool air to reduce your home temperature when you have other sources of heat trying to raise the temperature.

Avoid prolonged use of your oven when it’s really hot out. Also, try to reduce your use of heat-producing electronics like non-LED light bulbs, stoves, dryers, and more. Closing the blinds or curtains will also keep the sun (the original heat-producing appliance) from overheating your home.
