Don't Ignore These Signs of a Failing Water Heater

When you turn your shower handle to the maximum heat but still get lukewarm water, a red flag should go off in your head. If you haven’t gotten it fixed yet, don’t worry, there’s still time left! You’re not at the point where you’ve run out of hot water completely, but when a home appliance begins to fail, the signs are all in front of you. Our water heater experts at Mid-Florida Heating & Air are here to help you interpret those signs before it’s too late.

1. Lack of hot water

We don’t mean to be Captain Obvious, but the biggest sign that something is wrong is not having hot water. With standard water heaters, sediment builds up and settles at the bottom of the tank. Unfortunately, the minerals grow and block the burner from heating the water. Solve this issue by having your water tank flushed annually by a professional!

2. Discolored or muddy water

Does your water look cloudy? The discoloration is a sign your water heater is failing. Small mineral deposits are flowing into your tap and entering your drinking sources. While there are filters you can put in, these are only temporary fixes to getting a full repair or replacement.

3. Metallic odor

If you notice a metallic smell along with rust-colored water, your water heater could be corroding from the inside. This leaves your water heater susceptible to leaks and holes, which can leave you with a big mess.

4. Rumbling noises

Are you hearing popping, rumbling, or creaking? It’s not a ghost, but it’s probably time to call Mid-Florida Heating & Air. Remember the sediments we mentioned before? They’re the source of the noise. When the water begins to boil, the deposit also heats up and moves around.

5. Leaks

Water around your water heater is a bad sign. It means you likely have a small leak or fracture in the tank, which means you must replace it entirely. We recommend calling an expert to help you identify the source of the leak.
