Are Your Furry Friends Affecting Your Home's Air Quality?

Dogs are known as man’s best friend, but for many of us, that doesn’t even scratch the surface of our relationship with them. Whether you own a cat, dog, or even a bunny, you can proudly say your furry friends are a part of the family. But your love for them might be blinding you to an alarming truth: they are a significant source of indoor air pollution. Today we’re exploring how they affect air quality and the steps you can take to protect your health.

How Do Pets Impact Air Quality?

Before you even get out the door, you’ll probably find your pet’s fur all over your black shirt. As a pet owner, that’s just something we sacrifice, but you may not be aware of the pet dander floating around.

The American Lung Association defines “pet dander” as microscopic flecks of skin shed by cats, dogs, rodents, birds, and other animals with fur or feathers. Due to their small size and jagged shape, they’re more likely to circulate around and stick to furniture, bedding, and fabrics. They’re also the source of allergies, and inhaling these animal allergens can worsen respiratory symptoms.

Pet fur can also make its way up to your ventilation system and accumulate with other dust and debris, making it difficult for your HVAC system to work efficiently.

Tips to manage air quality with pets:

  • Routinely vacuum the carpets, sweep the floors, and dust surfaces.
  • Bathe your pets regularly. If you brush them, do it outside to prevent dander from spreading in your home.
  • Try to keep your pets off your furniture, or purchase furniture covers.
  • Change your HVAC filter every 30 days.
  • Install an air purification system.
